I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.
- John 15:1
This verse raises a couple of interesting points.
1. I am the true vine. This comment highlights the false vine and all its structure — the branches, growth mechanisms, feedings, waterings and fruit, and those who partake of its fruit.
Satan is the false vine, and his followers are his branches. The fruit is sadly partaken of by many people from all walks of life, all religions, cultures, nations, families, and individuals. Some participate with understand while others lack it but walk along life’s path without question. A significant difference between the true vine and the false one is that the fruit of the true vine is the pure fruit of the Holy Spirit whereas the false vine produces the fruit of wickedness and malicious spirits.
The saying “you are what you eat” is no more applicable than in this context. There are only two vines. Fortunately, the true vine also has a husbandman, God the Father, creating a vine fit for heaven. The false vine is its own husbandman, creating a distorted, self-absorbed vine. Those who partake of it become like it. 2. My Father is the husbandman. God the Father worked with Jesus all through his life, creating, moulding, pruning, feeding, and watering the true vine. That dedicated work produced the vine capable of passing on through experience and not merely words, the holiness and righteousness, teachings, and spirit, to all who will take note.
When a vine is growing right, so too will the branches. For a vine to be perfect, correct tending was imperative.
Today’s Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for the illustration of the vine. Thank you that humanity has a true vine that we can have faith in. Please help me to clearly see the difference and not ever be fooled by the false vine.
