Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth
- Psalm 124:8
This line is from the fifth Song of Degrees or Ascents, which are songs the priesthood sung as they climbed the stairs leading to the Temple, and also sung by pilgrims coming to attend one of the main annual feasts.
Let’s read it slowly and think about what it means for a minute.
Our help is in the name of the Lord. Despite feeling on top of things, we all need help many times during the days of our lives. Help comes in many forms, but, as believers, our main help needs to come from the Lord. Relying on the Lord for our help is needful for our faith. Relying on the Lord builds our faith.
Who made heaven and earth. If we have help, let’s go right to the top. The Lord made heaven and earth, so do you think He knows what’s going on with us?
Think about ‘heaven and earth.’
Think about the way the earth orbits the sun and simultaneously revolves in perfect balance, every day and night, without fail.
Think about the height of the mountains and depths of the seas, and the way the tides go from one side of the earth to the other every few hours while the earth rapidly spins but never leaves it ordered path.
Think about an earth that can have earthquakes, tornados, hurricanes, volcanoes and tsunami’s. Despite them creating chaos, panic and devastation in real terms from our human perspective, it still does not move one millimetre off course during or after any of them. Nor will it!
When the Lord made the heavens, he made the orbit and designed the balance of every area of the earth. He measured the heavens to ensure all their elements fit with the earth inside / under them.
Isaiah 40:12, while talking about this Lord, says, “Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out the heavens with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in balance?"
When we behold the wonders of the earth and heavens and the mastery of its perfect balance, we can also see the wonders of the Lord who made it.
I want the person who made that on my side! Or better phrased; I want to be on the side of the person who made that!
Today’s prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for the seemingly incalculable heaven and earth, and for recording it for me to read about. Thank you for the accuracy and the assurance, faith and belief I get from it. Thank You!
