For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better: Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you.
- Philippians 1:23-24
As I go through the months of intensive dialysis, I find some of my movements have slowed and my breathing is laboured. I often think of when I was a boy watching my dad , with his chronic asthma, trying to get around. He could move slowly but, after a mere few metres, would need to lean against the nearest pole or wall to catch his breath . As I get older I see the reality of the above verse, and I am sure my dear old dad had those thoughts on his mind.
I have spoken to numerous aged believers who would prefer to check out of this life, knowing that Christ, and the peace and painlessness that comes with Him, is on the other side.Yet, if it were that easy, the world would have a mass exodus of biblical proportions. It is needful that they remain here for us, to show faith, wisdom and perseverance. Older believers don’t alway realise who is watching them for encouragement. We should also encourage them to keep the faith.
Today’s Prayer: Dear Lord, help me as I get older, to realise that the strength and consistency of my spiritual life means so much to others; that other people are watching me. Please help me to stay strong through the difficult times, to encourage others, and be a sound witness until my time has come.
