But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
James 3:17
Earlier in the chapter James gets through informing us of the shortsightedness of seeking earthly and sensual wisdom as a foundation to build our lives on.
In verse 17 he speaks of a strange type of wisdom. Normally wisdom is linked with intelligence and the like. However, James, who wrote this wonderful, down-to-earth epistle seems to be speaking more of our inner condition than of the wisdom itself. Since when is wisdom peaceable, gentle, easy to be entreated?
We look at the first line which states that wisdom from above is first pure. It is unadulterated by human thought. After that, we are left with a volley of other words which are about the changing of our nature.
When Jesus called for those who are burdened and weary to come unto Him, they come unto this type of change! These are the transformations we all can expect when we invest in God’s wisdom. When we actually 'follow the instructions on the packet' we become like the wisdom of which God is speaking.
Its instructions are peaceable, gentle and easy to be entreated — they are easy to understand in our mind, and very clear. When we absorb wisdom ourselves our words become peaceable and gentle to others. Our inner change and life experiences ensure our words are still challenging but inoffensive.
They are full of mercy and their fruits are sweet to the soul because that is how we received them.
They are delivered to each of us without partiality. Jesus showed no partiality when talking to and healing people from all walks of life, backgrounds, and cultures. Beneath skin and sin lie we are all the same, in need of a saviour and change of nature. Jesus’ words and actions were the same to all sincere listeners. He did not show one ounce of bias, neither were His words cloudy in meaning. As we grow in wisdom we do the same.
We use and share wisdom without hypocrisy. The Bible says it is great folly to speak of God's wisdom when it is only in our heads. It must also be in the heart.
Is wisdom penetrating your heart? Are you doing what you suggest others do?
When you share it, is it ‘pure’ or diluted with your own bias? Do you deliver it free in a manner that is easy on a person's soul or use it as a club to pound those who don't agree with you?
Lastly, do you withhold it from people you think are unsavable?
The pure Word of God holds within it the power to unlock every chamber in our hearts. It frees the Holy Spirit to do His work with great effect on us all.
Today's prayer: Dear Lord, please help me to take in your Word in its pure form, to work on me first. When I speak to others, help me to seek your presence first that I may deliver it in its purest form for the greatest impact.
