Behold, I will do a new thing

Thus saith the Lord, which maketh a way in the sea, and a path in the mighty waters; Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.

Isaiah 43:16, 18-19

As my nephew, Josh, and his dear wife, Kim, bask in the joy of a new thing —the birth of their first child — a beautiful baby girl, they have the comfort of knowing that God developed her in the womb, as it states in Psalms 139, and has done a new thing with them.

Until parents experience the birth of their own children, it is difficult to comprehend the love that can come from your heart to that child or those children. It is a love that’s completely unexplainable prior to the birth, and even unexplainable after it. However, in that timeframe, something changes within us deep in our hearts, and we find we have a river of love pouring out that wasn’t there before for that child. We find, we will protect them to the death, that love is so great. Josh and Kim will now be going through this experience of God opening up another, deeper chamber of love in their hearts that they could not comprehend prior to the birth.

This is the type of love that God would like to have exude from us, toward him.

In the Gospels, Jesus was asked which of the commandments was the most important. His answer was interesting, as he did not choose any of the 10 commandments, which was the reason for that person’s question in the first place. Instead, he chose this line below, which most Christians still think is a new commandment, yet, at the time, it was an obscure writing in Deuteronomy that none of us would have paused upon.

He knew exactly what he was doing, pointing those debaters of scripture to the one thing we all must start and finish with, and to rid ourselves of the petty contests of which commandment or which apostle is the greatest. It was a new thing and, in the big picture, little else matters!

Luke 10:27 “And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind;

Deut 6:5 “And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

Let’s go forward, with an appreciation of God we have not experienced before, and thank him for his wonders and the ’new thing’s’ he has brought to life our lives.
